Designers have probably one the most important roles to play in fashion, ranging from creating new pieces and showcasing new trends either for fashion week or in the high street, planning and creating new looks or collections, starting off from sketches and drawings, until making the real thing ready for catwalks or stores. They also have to research and study trends, which they develop and incorporate into there own designs ready for production and manufacture. Designers often plan and create ideas to share and inspire others.

Some designers specialise in making unique one off piece products, usually suitable for fashion shows and catwalks, celebrities, award shows/parties and even wedding dresses. These pieces are usually made to measure and specific for only the recipient of the piece, making it unique and made specially.
Other designers are for the mass market, such as high street or online stores. These sort of designers are creating products to be sold to a high number of customers with the potential to provide products on a large scale, e.g. for brands  such as Topshop, Primark, ASOS and H+M.

Lady Gaga Meat Dress

An example of a designer that created something quite outrageous, heavily divided peoples opinions and definitely something that wouldn't be suited for everyone would be the Lady Gaga Franc Fernandez Meat Dress she wore for the VMA's in 2010. You can read more about the inspiration and ideas about the meat dress here.

Who are your favourite designers? What's your views on designers in fashion? What are your views on Lady Gaga's 2010 VMA Dress?
