AD| Working from home isn’t necessarily a new phenomenon but has certainly risen in popularity over the past eighteen months. The global pandemic forced many of us to transform our parts of our homes into makeshift home offices, from dining room tables to small corners of our bedrooms.

Many companies have realised that their staff work well from home and have decided to permanently close their offices, or turn to hybrid working, meaning our improvised workspaces will have to be adjusted. With that said, here are some tips for setting up a more ideal home office.

HOME OFFICE

A Dedicated Space
If working from home is going to be permanent for you, then your home office should be a permanent space too. This might mean you have to get creative, as we are not all lucky enough to have a study. You could convert your guest bedroom if you have one, but utility rooms, landings, garden sheds, an enclosed porch or even the space beneath your stairs are other options.

Lighting
Humans are hardwired to work during the daytime when it is light so, if possible, it would be wise to set up your space where there is plenty of natural light i.e., near a window. This should help you with your productivity and prevent problems such as eyestrain. If natural light isn’t possible, make sure you have a decent desk lamp so that you can clearly see what you’re doing.

Furniture
Your office furniture needs to be comfortable and a suitable height so that you are neither slouching, nor stretching. If your desk and chair are not the right height you will end up with backache, repetitive strain injury or other issues. Ergonomic furniture is the best choice because it follows a set of scientific principles to support function and comfort reducing the risk of joint paint, poor blood pressure, musculoskeletal problems, and arthritis.

Equipment
You will obviously need a computer/laptop, a mouse, and a keyboard. Your computer screen should be at eye level, so make sure it is on a raised platform if you are quite tall. You should also chat to your employer about providing you with other equipment should you need it, like an office printer or a phone. You will also need to ensure you have a decent internet connection, especially if you make lots of video calls throughout the day. A power surge protector is also a great idea because it will protect your computer and information in instances of a power outage.

Storage
Clutter is very distracting, so make sure you have shelving or storage cupboards so that you can keep everything neat and organised. Many desks come with built-in drawers, so this might be a quick fix for you.

Décor
To help make the space feel more inviting, it would be a good idea to add some décor and colour. Photo frames, artwork and plants are great options for personalising the space and making it feel more welcoming.

With some planning and organisation, you are sure to create a space that works for yourself and your family and ensures you are reaching your full potential at work. Just be sure to keep an eye on the clock, because it can be easy to get carried away when working from home and it’s absolutely crucial to maintain a work-life balance so that you don’t burn out.

What other tips do you have for setting up your home office?

AD| Children tend to be taught the basics of reproduction and sexual health at school, around the time of puberty or shortly before, but there is a lot that isn’t covered. As a result, when we grow into adults, we often have a fairly limited understanding of fertility, especially as it still remains quite a taboo subject. This is particularly true of infertility; we often avoid talking about the problems some couples face when trying to conceive a child.

If you hope to have a baby one day, it’s important to try and educate yourself as much as possible about fertility and how to increase your chances of conceiving. Here are five fantastic facts to get you started…

FEMALE PREGNANCY FERTILITY

1. Female Babies Are Born with the Most Eggs They’ll Ever Have
When a female baby is born, she has around 1-2 million eggs. With every menstrual cycle, roughly 3-5 thousand eggs are lost, until they eventually run out. Some women consider egg freezing as an option as this preserves their fertility until they are ready to have a baby in later life.

2. Ovulation is the Best Time to Try to Conceive
If you have a regular period, you should be able to determine when you are ovulating because it usually happens around 10-16 days before your period. You may also notice clearer cervical mucus and a small rise in temperature. Some women have other symptoms, like tender breasts or bloating. You could also use an ovulation test to determine when you are ovulating.

3. Your Diet Can Affect Your Fertility
If you are trying to conceive, you will need to consider your diet to boost your chances of conceiving. Eggs are one of the top fertility boosting foods because they are full of protein and Vitamins B12 and E. Oily fish, avocado, full fat diary and garlic are some other ingredients you should consider adding to your diet.

4. Endometriosis Can Affect Fertility
Endometriosis is a common condition where tissue similar to the lining of the womb grows outside of the womb. This tissue is what breaks apart and causes a bleed during a period and when endometriosis happens in the ovary, it can cause a cyst, which may affect a woman’s ovarian reserve and their overall fertility.

5. Women Can Donate their Eggs
Egg donation is when a woman with healthy eggs donates them to another woman who is undergoing fertility treatment. It’s an extraordinary act as it can help a couple with fertility issues to have a baby. It is legal in the UK, but it is not legal to pay a woman for her eggs.

Of course, the five facts above merely scratch the surface and there is still so much more to learn about both female and male fertility. One thing to note, if you have been trying to conceive unsuccessfully for over a year, it might be wise to make an appointment with your GP so that they can carry out an assessment and find out if there is anything that could be causing infertility.

Sometimes cases of infertility go unexplained, but often doctors will be able to come to a conclusion and suggest your options. Bear in mind that if you have been using some form of contraception, it may take some time for your fertility to return to normal.

Did you know any of these facts previously? What other facts about female fertility do you know?

AD| If you’re hoping to get into university within the next couple of years or so, you’re probably feeling a mixture of excitement and nerves. Some universities are particularly competitive, especially those that are higher up in the rankings, but don’t let that put you off. As long as you’re being proactive in accomplishing your objectives, you’re in with a good chance of securing a place at the university of your choice. Of course, it’s good to prepare as much as possible, so here are some tips from a sixth form in Somerset on securing a place at university.

UNIVERSITY STUDENT

Improve Your Grades
Your grades are arguably the most important aspect of your application. If you’re struggling with one of your school subjects, perhaps consider private tutoring or ask your teachers if you can attend some additional revision classes to help you secure the best grades possible. Begin your revision earlier and try to make healthy lifestyle choices so that you are better able to concentrate and absorb information. If you are tired and restless, you will struggle with your revision.

Do Your Research
Although courses across different universities will share similarities, they will also be different in many ways so it’s a good idea to do some research and tailor your applications to suit each of the commonalities. This will make your application relevant across the board to give you a better chance of securing offers from all of the universities you apply for, rather than standing out to just one. You could speak to the admissions departments directly and ask course related questions if there is something of particular interest to you.

Pursue Your Hobbies
Of course, you’ll be very busy studying for your exams, but it’s important to try and find time to pursue your hobbies outside of your obligatory schoolwork. In doing so, you will be able to demonstrate to universities that you are able to manage your time effectively and juggle multiple commitments, while furthering your skills and potentially even building up additional UCAS points. If you don’t have a particular hobby in mind, perhaps consider volunteering in the community.

Achieve an Award
Gaining an award will show universities that you are willing to take on new challenges and work hard, which sets you apart. The Duke of Edinburgh Award (DofE) is a good option, because it allows you to demonstrate commitment and determination over a longer period of time.

Extra Reading
If you’re currently studying A Levels, you will be learning a lot about the subjects that interest you, but extra reading will benefit you further. It’s really important to universities that their applicants can prove that they are truly engaged in the subject, particularly if you want to stand out amongst the crowd. You can reference your extra reading within your application and explain why it has helped you become better at your chosen subject.

Write a Fantastic Personal Statement
Your teachers will be able to help you with this, but your personal statement is a great opportunity to show that you deserve a place at the universities of your choice. There is a 4,000-character limit, including punctuation and spaces and it should be a total of 47 lines. Within your statement, you should explain why you’re keen to attend university and what makes you a suitable candidate, as well as the relevant skills you have acquired over the years.

Be Confident
If you’ve made it this far, you’ve already done a lot of hard work and have the right mindset to succeed. With that said, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t believe in yourself and have confidence in your abilities.

GUEST POST | Addiction can take many forms. Overuse of drugs and alcohol may be the best-known addictions. In fact, anyone who realises that they cannot stop using a particular substance or engaging in certain behaviours could be developing a dangerous habit.

Perhaps you are confident that you can control your compulsion, even seeing it as healthy if you are spending hours at the gym every day. It’s hard to be objective about your own behaviour, but even so, you may find that your habit is affecting your life in negative ways. Be honest with yourself, is it time to take action?

FREEDOM
Is your addiction damaging your health?
The disastrous effects of alcohol, many drugs, and tobacco are well known and too numerous to list here, but even spending all night gaming can cause health problems. Gamers even suffer from gaming-related injuries, for example, de Quervain’s Tenosynovitis - or gamer’s thumb,  just one of the conditions that can affect you if you have an uncontrolled habit. Repetitive strain injuries can also affect people who over-exercise repeatedly. A whole host of psychological issues can be connected to excessive exercising, which can be a symptom of underlying problems with body image. A balanced life with a good diet, relaxation, and exercise are crucial, and they can all be affected if you spend all your time on one repetitive activity.

Are your relationships affected?
Addictions destroy relationships and families. Alcohol, drugs, gambling or any addiction will push others away as the addict spends more and more time and energy on their obsession. The physical need for drugs or the dopamine hit of a gambling win will become the only driver in the addict’s life. Addicts often become anti-social, leading to loneliness and isolation. Recovery will allow you to rebuild and develop meaningful relationships in your life, which will, in turn,  assist you in maintaining sobriety or freedom from your addiction.

Is your addiction ruining your career?
If your addiction doesn’t ruin or hold back your career, then you are fortunate. How can you expect to perform at your best if you are exhausted or under the influence of mind-altering chemicals? The problems that addicts experience in personal relationships can also affect work relationships, making them difficult and unpleasant to work around.  Recovery from addiction will put you back on the right track to develop a career that can help you to achieve your life goals.

Have you lost your self-esteem?
When you are in the grip of your addiction, it is impossible to feel good about yourself. You think you should have the ability to control your gambling or drinking; you tell yourself and others that you have, but you fail again and again. The self-loathing that this can cause leads you back to your addictive substance or behaviour. Addiction recovery is a long road and can require professional support and intervention. Developing the ability to understand oneself and create a second chance at life can give an incredible boost to your self-esteem.

What ways can you change your lifestyle to create a better life in the future?
