AD - GIFTED | This year, I have wanted to improve my health and fitness, more drastically than last year, and I thought the first thing I really needed to change was my eating and drinking habits, not that I was doing either badly, I wanted to find healthier, more beneficial snacks that I could use as replacements for some snacks that weren't so good for me.

This year, I have wanted to improve my health and fitness, more drastically than last year, and I thought the first thing I really needed to change was my eating and drinking habits, not that I was doing either badly, I wanted to find healthier, more beneficial snacks that I could use as replacements for some snacks that weren't so good for me.

Kallo Rice Cakes

I was recently browsing in my local Sainsbury's after work one day, looking for some new, healthier snacks to try when I came across the Kallo Dark Chocolate Rice Cakes. I'd never tried rice cakes before, but I was really impressed with these. Such a tasty, high fibre snack, I would definitely recommend these to any chocolate lovers out there, still a great chocolate taste, with much more added health benefits, without the added calories.

Another snack that I picked up recently from Amazon were the Nakd Cashew Cookie Bars and the Nakd Ginger Bread Bars. I had tried the Cocoa Delight raw bars previously and enjoyed those, so I was hoping I'd be happy with some of the newer flavours, and I am in love, especially with the Ginger Bread Bar. It had such a sweet and spicy taste, just like Christmas! It just tastes so heavenly and I can't believe there is so little ingredients but such a great, authentic taste. These bars are a perfect on the go snack, whether you have them whilst travelling to work for breakfast, or as a simple in-between meal snack. They are super tasty and only made with very few ingredients, so there is nothing nasty or processed in these.

Indigo Nutrition

Since I bought my Breville Blend Active about a year ago, I've definitely upped my game when it comes to making smoothies, especially for breakfast if I'm in a rush. Smoothies are so quick and easy to make, it's a great alternative for a simple, nutritious breakfast. Recently I was kindly send a few health powders and tablets, that you can combine into your smoothies, that add great health benefits without spoiling the taste. I've been using a mixture of the Indigo Nutrition Organic Supergreens Powder* / Indigo Nutrition Organic Spirulina Tablets* / Indigo Nutrition Organic Wheatgrass Powder* and simply adding a small amount to my breakfast smoothies in the morning and I have really been liking using them. Even though you can't physically see any health benefits, you know that they are all packed with great nutrients and vitamins, it's something so easy you can incorporate into your lifestyle to lead a healthier day to day life.

Proper Pops Lime, Lemongrass and Garlic Chips

Something new I'm trying this month are the Proper Pops Lime, Lemongrass and Garlic Chips*. "We pop our nutrient rich chips under pressure. They don't go near a fryer, so they're 100% FULL OF TASTE with almost 90% less fat than your average crisp." The pop chips are basically a healthy alternative to crisps, and these ones I received definitely packed a punch with the flavours used. With a slight Asian influence, the Lime, Lemongrass and Garlic flavours were something I really enjoyed and I would really like to try some other flavours from the range as these really impressed me.

Next up, water. As you may have seen in my 16 Things for 2016 post, I wanted to increase my water intake as I felt that I really wasn't drinking enough. Water is super important when leading a much healthier lifestyle, so I was super happy to receive a bottle of the Nuva Ginger and Lemon Spring Water*. I love flavoured waters, my favourite being the Volvic Lemon and Lime water. But when I tried this one from Nuva, I was really impressed. It was such a lovely, not too overpowering ginger and lemon flavour, that I drank this first thing in the morning before breakfast, just to make my body feel refreshed and get it started for the day.

Stur water

Finally, another water related product here. I was kindly gifted a variety of Stur Water Enhancers* to try and test, and they have definitely helped me in my aim to drink more water and increase my daily intake. I was sent 2 Real Brewed Tea with Lemon, 1 Real Brewed tea with Peach and the Boldly Blackcurrant and Apple Flavour, all of which are super tasty, but my favourite has got to be the Real Brewed Tea with Lemon, it's such a refreshing drink for the early mornings and I've been having a pint of water each day before breakfast, with a little squeeze of it, just to add some flavour.

My first impressions of Stur, I would highly recommend them to anyone who finds plain water boring to drink, as these are a great little additive that can help add some fruit flavour and help you to increase your water intake. They also come in such handy travel sized containers that they are easy to take on the go an add to some water wherever you go!

What new foods and drinks have you been trying this month? Would you consider purchasing any that I have included in today's post?

Early mornings are never my kinda thing. Multiple alarm snoozes later and I always find myself rushing around to get ready for the day, and always forgetting to have any kind of breakfast. Cereals and toast with butter/jam/peanut butter always get a little boring, so I wanted to find something that I could eat on the go and something that was still good for you. So on a recent food shop, I browsed the aisles looking for some inspiration among the cereal bars and snack sections, and came across something I liked the look of. Enter Belvita.
Belvita appeared to have various varieties of there breakfast biscuits, so naturally as a chocolate lover, I was drawn to the Cocoa Choc Chip biscuits, and they have definitely not disappointed! Packed with 5 wholegrains and 4 hour slow release carbohydrates, these breakfast biscuits are great for those in a rush, but still want something quick, easy and nutritious whilst on the go. I would highly recommend these to anyone looking to try something new for breakfast or even as a mid morning snack, as these are absolutely delicious!
However, if choc chip isn't your thing, these biscuits come in a number of different varieties, including crunchy oats, forest fruits, fruit & fibre, honey & nut and milk & cereal. So there is definitely a flavour out there for everyone! I know next time I'm at my local supermarket, I will 100% be picking up some more of these as they are the perfect snack to start the day with!

Have you tried these Belvita biscuits before? What are your go-to breakfast ideas for on the go?

AD| Are you looking to get fitter, eat better and just lead a more healthy lifestyle? Do you find major diet changes overwhelming? What not start small and simple?

Creating a more maintainable, healthier lifestyle doesn't mean you have to make a number of drastic changes to your current routine. Instead of making many big changes all at once, it may be better to start with a few smaller ones. This way, it’s more manageable, and you're more likely to continue for a longer period of time. Not only can these changes improve your health and fitness, it can also reduce your risk of chronic diseases and illnesses. Below, I have compiled a list of 8 simple ways to make healthier lifestyle choices, and a number of them I have incorporated into my daily life.

lifestyle

1. The Perfect Bed Setup
Sleep is a vital and important aspect of everyday life, and honestly, who doesn't love to sleep? Having good quality sleep helps your body to re-energise, refresh and heal itself. The average adult needs between 7 and 9 hours sleep to be fully rested. It's also beneficial to get your body into a good sleeping routine, by going to sleep/waking up at similar times each day. The key to a good sleep is by making sure your bed is comfortable, with a supportive mattress and pillows.

Another important factor to mention is bed height. You want to be able to get in and out of bed easily, and this will help keep your bed accessible at all times. The sleep-tech brand Simba have a great article regarding this, where they discuss 'how high should my bed be', and is definitely an interesting read!

2. Keep Hydrated
Water makes up a large percentage of the body, and without enough of the stuff, dehydration can set in, as well as a dry mouth, tiredness, and headaches. Your body predominantly uses water in cells, organs, and tissues - helping to regulate body temperature and other bodily functions. It's also important to keep hydrated through physical activity and even through illness to ensure hydration levels topped up, as water can be lost through sweat, breath and getting rid of waste products from the body.

3. Stay Stress Free
Having stress that builds up over time can cause some serious issues, such as acne and high blood pressure. For those struggling with stress, taking CBD gummies - maybe those from Joy Organics are a great supplement to take, and could be a good option for stress management and sleep support, as well as to help you relax from your chaotic day. Great ways of managing stress include exercise, relaxation, meditation, and even taking a warm bubble bath can help you unwind.

4. Get A Good Breakfast
Breakfast has always been considered to be one of "the most essential meals of the day", and usually frowned upon if you skip it. By ensuring to eat a good breakfast every morning, you're allowing your body to gain energy, kick-start your metabolism, increase your alertness levels, as well as consuming essential vitamins and nutrients required for good health and wellbeing.

healthy diet

5. Get Your 5-A-Day
Fruit and vegetables are a vital part of a consuming a healthy, balanced diet and can help you stay feeling fit and healthy. It's important that you eat enough of these to ensure your body is getting the nutrients it needs for daily bodily functions. Incorporating plenty of fruit and vegetables in your diet can help keep your body feel fitter, healthier and happier. The benefits of consuming plenty of fruit and vegetables includes getting plenty of nutrients, vitamins and minerals. These can reduce the risk of serious health problems, such as heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and obesity.

6. Avoid Harmful Pollutants
We should probably try to avoid temptation of any drugs or pollutants that could be harmful to our bodies, or at least try to reduce the amounts we consume, e.g. alcohol in moderation, cut down on tobacco etc. Doing this is good for our bodies, where there are fewer toxins circulating our systems, reducing the risk of certain diseases.

7. A Healthy, Balanced Diet
Making healthy lifestyle choices is all about balance and moderation. A balanced diet is definitely a vital part of maintaining good health, can help control your weight, increase your energy levels, and can also boost how you feel. This change in your diet and lifestyle can be something you work on over a more long-term period. You'll be able to incorporate eating a wide variety of foods into your diet, making sure you're consuming the correct amounts, and not over-eating. Make sure to include produce from all food groups including carbohydrates, fats, fruits and vegetables, dairy products, grains, and protein. Even if you're looking to lose weight through your new lifestyle changes, it's also important not to restrict yourself from what you really like - a takeaway or a glass of wine once in a while won't hurt!

8. Follow A Regular Exercise Routine
Taking part in regular exercise is probably one of the best things you can do for your overall health. Some positive benefits of exercise include managing and maintaining a healthy body weight, building muscle and reducing your risk of diseases. As well as these, exercise can also be used to help boost your mood, improve your mental health, and can even help you get a better night of sleep. A top tip for beginning your exercise routine is to pick something you enjoy and that challenges you. Exercise can be made to be fun, which will be a critical factor for how long you keep it up, helping you to continue your routine for a longer period of time, allowing you to achieve your fitness goals.

Have you made any lifestyle changes recently? Are you looking to get fitter and feel healthier?

AD - GIFTED | We all love a cup of tea now and again. But sometimes you might want to switch things up and pick a new flavour tea to try. That's where Shibui Tea come to the rescue! If you've not heard of Shibui Tea before, here's a brief overview. Shibui Tea are a family run business with over 35 years of experience. Shibui Tea

"Shibui is a Japanese word which has no direct translation into English. It is a way of describing something which appears simple but has actually an underlying complex nature. We feel that this sums up our perception of tea perfectly. Tea is just tea, surely? Ah – but look into it in a bit more detail and it’s a lot more complicated than that!"

Shibui Tea

I was kindly gifted a selection of their Tea Pyramids* in a variety of delicious flavours. The tea bags are made from a biodegradable corn starch and contain no plastic. The tags are sealed to the bags using an ultrasonic method so no glue is used. The wrapper that the tea bags come in inside the tube looks like it's made from plastic but it's actually made from a clever material called Natureflex - this is made from wood pulp and is compostable and biodegradable. Super environmentally friendly!

If you saw my last travel adventure diary blog post, I jetted off to the beautiful island of Zakynthos, Greece, and I loved sharing my travel itinerary and my recommendations from the trip. I thought I would produce a new blog post as I've just recently got back from a short trip to Milan, Italy. My sister and her husband recently moved to a new house in Castel San Giovanni, so that was the inspiration behind the trip. I wanted to create a similar travel diary for this, so I get to share what I got up to, places I explored and of course a few of my photographs from the trip.
So let's get started!

Monday 29th October
My trip to Milan, Italy, started off early on Monday morning. My dad, my brother and I headed for the airport, (London Gatwick), to catch an EasyJet flight to Milan Linate. The flight took around 2 hours, but it definitely seemed much much shorter!

view from plane

Once arriving at Linate airport, we took a shuttle bus to Milan Lambrate Station. This was around a 15 minute drive. Here is where I purchased the tickets and was able to catch a train to Castel San Giovanni where my sister lives. On this evening, Milan was very incredibly stormy. Heavy rain, thunder and lightning! This caused a major disruptions to the train service and many trains were cancelled. We waited nearly 2 hours!! Once the train arrived at Lambrate station, it took just over an hour to reach Castel San Giovanni. I even managed a little nap on the train!

Once arriving at my sisters new house, we tucked in to some delicious food. She plated up a quick snack; a selection of Italian meats, cheeses, roasted peppers, bread and chutneys. This was then followed by a gorgeous slow cooked Beef and Vegetable stew. It was delicious and perfect for a cold stormy evening.

For the rest of the evening, I was joined in bed with Luna! Isn't she the cutest!

Tuesday 30th October
After a long nights sleep, I was able to go outside and enjoy the view from the new house. You could see for miles and miles. Beautiful autumnal colours of greens and yellows in the distance. It was simply breath-taking.

Ziano Piacentino

For lunch, we had a quick and easy pasta dish. As a huge pasta lover, I finished this in no time at all. The dish consisted of small filled tortellini, it was with some kind of cured Italian Ham, with a creamy cheese sauce and a hint of fresh chillies, finished off with a sprinkling of Parmesan cheese. Delicious!

Cheesy tortellini pasta

Once lunch was finished, we got ourselves ready and headed off out into the centre of Castel San Giovanni; a small town in the province of Piacenza. We stopped off for a quick coffee at a small café. Doesn't it look simply delicious?!

Italian coffee

We spent around an hour strolling around the town centre. Going into various little shops. They had just put some super cute Christmas lights on display, making it feel super festive.

Christmas lights in castel san giovanni

For dinner, we then drove to a Japanese Sushi restaurant (Il Ristorante Giapponese Tokio) in Castel San Giovanni. The price for this was less than 25 euros per person, which was such a great price as there was SO much to choose from. Plus it's all-you-can-eat, so you can imagine how much we all ordered. I couldn't move once we had finished!

Il Ristorante Giapponese Tokio

We ordered this INCREDIBLE Sushi boat. Even though there was just 5 of us, this boat was for just 3 people, and there was more than enough to keep everyone occupied. Packed with plenty of delicious Sushi Nigiri, Sashimi and Gunken with Prawns, Tuna, Salmon and White Fish.

Il Ristorante Giapponese Tokio

My favourite was definitely the two types of Sushi with Tuna and Avocado. They were amazing!

We also tucked in to Tempura Prawns, Spring Rolls, Vegetable Noodles, Beef Fillet with a spicy pepper sauce, Salmon and Tuna Sashimi and much much more! I had never eaten so much Sushi in my life before. This restaurant was incredible, and I can't wait to go back!

Wednesday 31st October
Wednesday morning started off with a quick and simple fried egg on toast for breakfast. One of the easiest breakfast dishes to make, and who doesn't love it? This was followed by a few cups of coffee and both some fresh red orange juice/fizzy red orange juice. I'm addicted to the stuff and so upset that it's not widely available here in England.

Lunchtime came around quite quickly, and of course you can guess what I had. More pasta! This time it was a super quick Pesto pasta with Parmesan cheese. Such an easy dish to make, with very few ingredients. Simply grab some pasta, green pesto, salt, pepper, Olive oil and your preferred cheese, and you're good to go. You can image this took me 0.5 seconds to scoff down! So good and so tasty!

We then spent the afternoon teaching my sister to play 'Canasta' - a card game originating from Uruguay, South America.

canasta

From around 7pm, we headed out to a local town hall. As it was Halloween, there was a local festival taking place; 'Festa della Zucca' - Festival of the Pumpkin. They have a variety of different traditional dishes, all containing pumpkin in some form. Naturally I went for the Ravioli di Zucca - Pumpkin Ravioli, with a mountain of fresh Parmesan Cheese! For dessert, I have a really interesting combination of Chocolate Cake with a thin layer of Pumpkin puree in the middle. Sounds odd, I know, but it was incredibly delicious, that I could have eaten 2 or 3 more!

Thursday 1st November
We headed out to the town of Borgonovo; a small town in the province of Piacenza.

Borgonovo

We headed to a local pub/restaurant, Locanda Stazione, to have a taste of the super affordable lunch
menu they have to offer. Included in the menu, you could start your meal with a pasta dish (primo), followed by a meat/fish dish (secondo) from the set menu. Alongside this, you were able to choose a drink to go with your food, as well as being given a bottle of water, and finishing the meal with an Italian coffee. All for just 15 euros per person!

Penne Arrabbiata

A primo is the first course of an Italian lunch, and you guessed it, my eyes lit up when I saw they had Penne Arrabiata on the set menu. One of my all time favourite pasta dishes. This dish had such a sweet and fiery tomato sauce, topped off with a heavy sprinkling of Parmesan cheese.

plate of grilled meats

For secondo, this course including a small section of different meats; lamb, pork, beef, chicken and sausage. I accompanied this with a small green side salad, dressed in Olive Oil and Balsamic Vinegar.

After eating far too much at lunchtime, we all went for a little walk around the town. We popped into a small cake shop, 'La Cremeria', and purchased this beautiful cake with fresh whipped cream, chocolate and walnuts. It was simply stunning and cost only 20 euros! I could have eaten the whole thing!

La Cremeria Borgonovo

For dinner, my sister cooked a traditional Italian dish of 'Cotechino con Lenticchie' - a hearty dish of sausage and lentils that is usually served on New Year’s Eve in Italy. This meal also included potatoes, several varieties of beans and some fresh chilli. This dish was so delicious, super filling and perfect for a cold evening. We enjoyed it with lots of crusty bread for soaking up the sauce.

Friday 2nd November
The weather on Friday wasn't very nice! We headed out to a local supermarket (Eurospin) for a few groceries that we needed, and carried on our card games from the day before. For lunch, we made some delicious Piadina's; a thin Italian flat bread, similar to a tortilla wrap, filled with a variety of ingredients. For my Piadina, I had Italian salami and ham, mozzarella cheese, rocket and some antipasto roasted mixed peppers. (I forgot to take a photo of it, as I was so hungry, I tucked in straight away!)

In the evening, we headed to a traditional restaurant - Casa Galli, in Ziano Piacentino. A home style cooking restaurant that had plenty to offer. Simple dishes that are local for the region, but made with a loving touch. We started off our meal with the usual Antipasto with various cured Italian meats, roasted peppers, freshly baked bread, quiche slices and some Russian salad. We also tried some homemade red wine, but I wasn't much of a fan. It was just too sharp and acidic for me.
Antipasto Casa Galli

More pasta! This time we had two varieties of tortellini - my favourite! These were fresh and homemade stuffed with Ricotta & Spinach and one with Pumpkin. They were some of the more tastiest pastas I have ever eaten. So fresh, smooth and they just melted in the mouth. I would have been very happy just to eat this all night!

Ricotta & Spinach Tortellini Casa Galli
Zucca Tortellini Casa Galli

We also got to try a typical Italian dish from the region - 'Pisarei e faso' - which was little dumplings with mixed beans.

Pisarei e faso Casa Galli

Moving on to the main course, there was the option to choose Pork, Duck or Chicken. I obviously went for the traditional roasted Chicken with sides of roast potatoes and fresh steamed vegetables. Very simple, but very tasty!

After my main course, I was already completely full up. But now it was time for dessert, and there is ALWAYS room for dessert! The lovely lady at the restaurant brought us various homemade desserts, including a super fresh and zingy grapefruit semifreddo - semi-frozen dessert bursting with sharp fresh grapefruit. This was incredible!

We then had a plate of homemade cakes brought to the table. A lovely chocolate cake, chocolate 'salami' slices and another cake made with some fruit chutney.

Saturday 3rd November
Saturday was sadly the day we had to go home. We got up quite early to pack everything up and fill our cases. We took a train from Piacenza to Milan Centrale Station, which took around 40 minutes. From there, we took the airport shuttle bus to Linate Airport.

piacenza station

Once we arrived at Linate airport, and gone through security, I popped into the shops and picked up various different chocolates for myself and friends. When heading towards the gate, I came across this amazing piece of artwork, and can you believe it was completely made from LEGO. It was incredible to look at and I'm sure it would have taken days, if not weeks to build!

linate airport

Of course I was quite hungry and decided to have McDonalds for lunch. A large Big Mac meal went down a treat! We then boarded the flight back to London Gatwick, which I managed to get around 1 hours sleep on, which was nice.

big mac mcdonalds

Once landing back in the UK, we took the train home and had a nice evening relaxing. Spending the day travelling makes you so incredibly tired, so I treated myself to Domino's Pizza for dinner.

That concludes my travel diary and how I spent 144 Hours in Castel San Giovanni, Milan. I honestly can't wait to go back. My mouths already watering at the sight of that incredible Sushi boat from the Japanese restaurant, and the homemade tortellini pasta at the restaurant in Ziano Piacentino!

Have you visited Milan before? Where is your next travel destination?
